Author Guidelines

Submit a Proposal

Please include the following information in your proposal so we can get a clear idea of what your book or guide is about, who you are writing it for, and why it is important in the field. You may download and fill out this proposal form, but do not have to use it. Upload all of your files when prompted in Stage 2 and do not submit chapters in Stage 3.

Title information 

• Working title and subtitle 
• Topic(s) addressed (choose from the list of categories)
• Abstract (summary of 250 words or less)

Content information 

• Purpose: In two or three paragraphs, explain the purpose of the book or guide and how it will benefit educators.
• Audience: Who will be interested and benefit most from your work? Identify a primary and secondary audience, and avoid general terms, such as “all educators.” 
• Manuscript information: Anticipated word count of the manuscript; number of figures (tables, charts, graphics, photos, etc.); and digital components, if any (bonus online content, QR codes, etc.). Our books typically range between 35,000 and 65,000 words. 
• Outstanding features: List what you consider to be the most distinctive or unique features of the work. What will it offer that previous or similar works do not? How will it contribute to the field, and what problems can it help solve.
• Other information: What is your timetable for completing the work? What portion is now complete? Note if any portion of the book has been previously published in any format.

Market information 

• Market: Explain why there is a need for this work. How large is the market for this book or guide? Does it have potential for course adoption at any level or schoolwide or districtwide purchases? 
• Promotional Plan: Describe your planned outreach to organizations and individuals, including the following: an overview of your recent and forthcoming speaking engagements; social media, website, and podcast presence; media coverage; possible partnership arrangements; bulk sales potential; and the like.
• Competition: Please list the most significant related and competing books from the last few years, and discuss their specific strengths and weaknesses. Spell out how your material will be different from these competing works. Include titles from ISTE+ASCD and other publishers. If there are no direct competitors to your proposed book, then address the competition in terms of the general market for the topic. 

Alignment to ISTE+ASCD initiatives

• Transformational Learning Principles: Include an explanation of how you will address at least one of the ISTE+ASCD Transformational Learning Principles. 
• ISTE Standards (If applicable): If the book has a significant technology focus, include an explanation of how you will address the ISTE Standards. At least one section (Students, Educators, Coaches, Education Leaders) should be addressed. 

Table of Contents

For books, provide a detailed outline of the work, including chapter titles and section headings. Include a brief synopsis of each chapter, clearly representing the organization of ideas in the book. For guides, describe the material that would appear on each of the six pages, including ideas for images, tables, or other elements that would illustrate the concepts. 

Sample chapters 

For books, provide one or two chapters that give a clear idea of both the content and writing style. We prefer substantive chapters from the heart of the book, and at least one chapter should offer practical material. (If you can send us a complete manuscript, that's even better.) For guides, we recommend including a sample page of the manuscript with your proposal.

Author information 

Be sure to submit as a separate document(s). For each author, provide a bio or résumé/CV. Include the following information: Position and affiliation, previous publications, contact info (address, phone number, email address), social media/online info (social platform handles, website, blog, etc.), and organizational affiliations (including ISTE+ASCD). Upload author information as a separate file(s), which will not go to reviewers, and make sure your other documents do not include identifying information.

What Happens Next?

Your proposal and sample chapters will be reviewed by our Acquisitions Team. When we review your proposal, we weigh many factors, including the appeal of the topic to the ISTE+ASCD audience, the expertise of the author, and how the proposed book would fit into our existing lineup of publications. We may also send proposals to teachers and leaders in the field for anonymous review.

The review process usually takes two to three months, and we will inform you of the outcome as soon as possible. Please let us know if another publisher is reviewing your proposal during this interval.
